PREMIER ART DECO STERLING SILVER CIGARETTE CASE. Late 1920s product of Moore & Hofman (Newark, New Jersey). Superbly bench-crafted at the height of the Roaring Twenties. Moore & Hofman were successors to Schmitz, Moore & Co. Operating from 1915 until 1922. Cushion shape with gently rounded corners. Hand hammered cover with bold geometric incised borders and marvelous “Japanese” script monogram. Spring assist p ush-tab opening on a flush seven-knuckle hinge. Spring-loaded pierced bar secures contents against snailed wall. Back edge stamped “STERLING” “8” and carrying conjoined initials MH of the maker. The condition of this nearly century old case is nothing short of astounding. 4.2″ wide to push-tab, 3.3″ deep, 0.5 thick. 106.2 grams or 3.4 troy ounces.

This special item remains in Excellent condition, (see condition report above), and bears a monogram CR. Weight (g): 77.6g. Because of different gold testing practices acid & stone test vs. S Authenticity Guarantee electronic gold testing machine, actual gold contents of the jewelry may vary 1k – 2k from what we list it as. (10k could be 8-11k, 14k could be 12-15k, 18k could be 16-19k etc). This is especially true for vintage & antique jewelry since before 1981 jewelry manufacturers could round up from 13.5k & still stamp as 14k, etc. Different plumb solder (slightly higher or lower carat) can also contribute to this discrepancy. S Authenticity Guarantee electronic gold testing equipment. We measure all of our stones in MM using a gauge. We do our best to correctly estimate carat weights, which can be challenging because we are measuring stones that are already set in jewelry. We try to underestimate the carat weight and measurements of our stones, but there may be some discrepancy in stone weights. We have tested all stones that we identify and guarantee their purity. Within the above parameters. All unidentified stones will be marked as such. All of our diamonds are graded while they are already set in the jewelry. We do our best to accurately yet conservatively grade our diamonds? Clarity and color, which can be made difficult by the diamonds being set already in the jewelry. Our clarity grades may be 2 levels off from another? S opinion of the clarity, and color may be 3 levels off from another? S opinion of the color. We have tested all stones & metals that we identify and guarantee their purity. All of our stones are natural earth mined stones, unless stated otherwise. We like to protect the integrity of the pieces so we do not offer or suggest. Display items and boxes are not included unless stated otherwise.

I suspect this pretty snuff or tobacco box was a retirement gift. Marked with the “three crowns” for Swedish sterling silver. Date code X5 = 1876, so inscribed 1884 after manufacturing date. I could not identify the silversmith or town mark. The top is monogrammed “ATL”. The reverse is inscribed “af Arbetare”, translated (I believe) to “from workers”. Condition: Decent giftable condition. Mentionable issue: corners of lid show damage as seen in photos #6 & #7. The lid does not stay shut, probably because of this reason. Monogram and inscription as described and photographed. Surface patina has light surface scratches commiserate with age and use. No pings, dings, dents, bashes, flat spots, carbon spots, gouges, unusual scratches, or other mentionable issues. Recent thorough hand polish. Dimensions: 3.25″ wide x 2-1/8″ long x 1 thick. Silver weight: 69 grams. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. All dimensions and weights approximate. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to offer this week Art Deco S&D-925/Solid Silver Cigarette Box 5.52″ x 3.14″ 169.48 grams = 5.97 ounces. Here the difference with ordinary boxes is that the partition that holds the cigarettes is solid hand-engraved silver, which gives extra weight to the snuff box. I don’t know anything about the country, I believe it was made in Italy, any information is welcome. Comes from a private collection.
