PREMIER ART DECO STERLING SILVER CIGARETTE CASE. Late 1920s product of Moore & Hofman (Newark, New Jersey). Superbly bench-crafted at the height of the Roaring Twenties. Moore & Hofman were successors to Schmitz, Moore & Co. Operating from 1915 until 1922. Cushion shape with gently rounded corners. Hand hammered cover with bold geometric incised borders and marvelous “Japanese” script monogram. Spring assist p ush-tab opening on a flush seven-knuckle hinge. Spring-loaded pierced bar secures contents against snailed wall. Back edge stamped “STERLING” “8” and carrying conjoined initials MH of the maker. The condition of this nearly century old case is nothing short of astounding. 4.2″ wide to push-tab, 3.3″ deep, 0.5 thick. 106.2 grams or 3.4 troy ounces.

For your consideration is an Art Deco era silver plated cedar lined tabletop cigarette box. Created in the Egyptian Revival style which enjoyed a fashionable renaissance during the 1920s, this is a heavy and well crafted highly decorated piece that’s unique in its design. Engraved hieroglyphics and an open filigree of Egyptian figures surrounds the exterior of the box holding a wood cigarette case with an emerald green lacquer finish. A figure of Isis supports the box at each corner. The cover is richly detailed with woven lotus blossoms intertwined with additional Egyptian figures of nobility on top, with additional decorative detailing found on the lids interior. Standing approximately 4.5″ in height, the box measures 4″ wide, 7 in length, and weighs just under 3 pounds. No hallmark was found on inspection. Areas of light wear, particularly at the corners, as well as an occasional random speck of plate loss can be found on close inspection, though these aren’t casually noticed or distracting. Otherwise the box is in beautiful vintage condition showing mild wear commensurate to age and a history of gentle well cared for use. I have up for sale a wonderful antique / vintage original circa 1920s Art Deco Evans Nickel Silver Cigarette Case & Matchbook Vesta. Both are monogrammed with the letters W B. This is a matching set and its in the original box. The cigarette box 2-7/8″ x 3-3/4″ x 3/8 and is hinged, so it will easily fit in a front shirt pocket or pants pocket. The matchbook holder has a top ring so it can be used as a pendant or pocket, it measures approx 1-5/8″ x 2-1/4″ and tapers from 3/8″ down to 1/4″ as it shaped like a matchbook. The storage box is worn but its obviously original to the set. As noted the set is Monogrammed with the letters W B. The case would work great for cigarettes or joints, the matchbook holder is for a matchbook not stick matches as there is no striker and its shaped exactly like a matchbook – it tapers. ONLY THROW OUT THE BOXES AND PACKAGING AFTER YOU HAVE INSPECTED THE ITEM OR ITEMS AND FIND NO DAMAGE other than what may be noted in the condition report or shown in the pics. SAVE THE BOX AND ALL PACKAGING, PICS OF THE OUTER BOX AND INNER BOX, AND OF THE DAMAGED ITEM WOULD BE REQUIRED. THIS IS PART OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITY WHEN IT COMES TO DAMAGE. Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to offer this week Art Deco S&D-925/Solid Silver Cigarette Box 5.52″ x 3.14″ 169.48 grams = 5.97 ounces. Here the difference with ordinary boxes is that the partition that holds the cigarettes is solid hand-engraved silver, which gives extra weight to the snuff box. I don’t know anything about the country, I believe it was made in Italy, any information is welcome. Comes from a private collection. The cover opens with nice tension and closes securely. The hinges appear to be in good original condition.
