Antique Playing Card box – holds two decks of cards. The exterior has been cleaned and refreshed with organic coconut oil. Circa 1920s – 1940s. 7.5″ W overall x 4″ D x 2 T. What Is Quilted Maple? Quilted maple refers to a figure pattern (not a species) found in certain maple trees, typically Bigleaf Maple. , which grows in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The quilted figure resembles a rippling, bubbly, or “pillow-like” texture, almost three-dimensional in appearance when finished. It’s caused by irregularities in the growth of the grain – not by disease or damage, but by natural genetic variation, which makes it rare and unpredictable. Characteristics of Quilted Maple. Bubbly, undulating, “quilted” ripples – resembles water or waves. Strong; appears to shimmer or change depth depending on the angle of light. Most commonly found in Bigleaf Maple, sometimes in other soft maples. Medium hardness, easy to work with hand and power tools. Takes stains and clear finishes beautifully, which enhances the 3D effect. High-end musical instruments : Electric guitar tops (especially for brands like PRS, Gibson, and boutique makers). Luxury furniture and veneers. Jewelry boxes, playing card boxes, knife handles. Much rarer than flame (curly) maple. The best quilted maple is bookmatched and used as a focal point in projects.

Looks to be 1880s-1900 or so. Very fine details and stunning embossing. Scene of some frontiersman, settlers, cows, around a campfire and hauling their cover wagon. Small dent to one corner (see finger point pic). A couple of small rust spots (see finger point pics). 9″ x 8.5″. This appears to be an antique tintype photograph case, possibly from the mid-to-late 19th century. The embossed or relief design on the case depicts a frontier or pioneer camp scene, complete with a covered wagon, settlers around a campfire, and a tent. The floral border suggests a Victorian-era aesthetic, which was common in decorative items from that time. Possible Uses & History. Photograph Case : These cases were often used to store and protect daguerreotype, ambrotype, or tintype photographs. Jewelry or Keepsake Box : Some similar cases were repurposed for storage of small valuables. Early American or Western Expansion Theme : The imagery reflects themes of westward expansion in the United States, a popular motif in 19th-century art and culture.
