Separate, they had a green felt liner inside, mid to late 1800s all hand made dovetails and square finish nails on the bottom, front trim has slight seperation, otherwise old original surface with normal wear from use over the years, there is no key but the original lock is still there. Looks to be 1880s-1900 or so. Very fine details and stunning embossing. Scene of some frontiersman, settlers, cows, around a campfire and hauling their cover wagon. Small dent to one corner (see finger point pic). A couple of small rust spots (see finger point pics). 9″ x 8.5″. This appears to be an antique tintype photograph case, possibly from the mid-to-late 19th century. The embossed or relief design on the case depicts a frontier or pioneer camp scene, complete with a covered wagon, settlers around a campfire, and a tent. The floral border suggests a Victorian-era aesthetic, which was common in decorative items from that time. Possible Uses & History. Photograph Case : These cases were often used to store and protect daguerreotype, ambrotype, or tintype photographs. Jewelry or Keepsake Box : Some similar cases were repurposed for storage of small valuables. Early American or Western Expansion Theme : The imagery reflects themes of westward expansion in the United States, a popular motif in 19th-century art and culture.
