Quilted maple refers to a figure pattern (not a species) found in certain maple trees, typically Bigleaf Maple. , which grows in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The quilted figure resembles a rippling, bubbly, or “pillow-like” texture, almost three-dimensional in appearance when finished. It’s caused by irregularities in the growth of the grain – not by disease or damage, but by natural genetic variation, which makes it rare and unpredictable. Characteristics of Quilted Maple. Bubbly, undulating, “quilted” ripples – resembles water or waves. Strong; appears to shimmer or change depth depending on the angle of light. Most commonly found in Bigleaf Maple, sometimes in other soft maples. Medium hardness, easy to work with hand and power tools. Takes stains and clear finishes beautifully, which enhances the 3D effect. High-end musical instruments : Electric guitar tops (especially for brands like PRS, Gibson, and boutique makers). Luxury furniture and veneers. Jewelry boxes, playing card boxes, knife handles. Much rarer than flame (curly) maple. The best quilted maple is bookmatched and used as a focal point in projects.
