RARE WWI AME RI CAN’RUBERINE’ VINTAGE MILITARY GUNNER’S THREAD SEALANT, BLACK INK STAMPED SIDEWALLS, W/CURVED TYPOGRAPHY WOOD BOX CRATE. ALL WOOD CONSTRUCTION &. WWI era Ame ri can vintage military gunner sealants & lubricants for mortars & cannon ammunition assembly. 23 1? 4″ Width x 8 1? 2″ Height x 9 1? 2 Depth. Offered for your review and consideration is this really interesting and very scarce early 20th century vintage WWI Ame ri can wood box crate containing’Ruberine’ military gunner’s sealant, used in the field assembly of munitions used in mortars and cannons. This material would have been used by both Ame ri can and Br i t i sh allied forces. It was important to bring unassembled munitions to the front lines partially assembled, so that there would be less likelihood of unnecessary, avoidable loss and of losing invaluable munitions, shells and cannon rounds due to accident, incoming mortar fire or moisture. This however necessitated troops and in this case’gunners,’ to assemble mortar and cannon rounds in the field, where this material,’Ruberine’ would be used to coat the machined threads of the munition casings, making them both air and water tight, so that the shells would be then’loaded,’ yet dry and less susceptible to damage by water, which was a constant threat in the water-logged, dug network of trenches of the front lines. A terrific and very scarce antique WWI Ame ri can military artifact. Good to Very Good overall vintage condition.
